“2 Weeks of racing on Riley Lake”

RC Fleet #14 & RAMYA Members – Oct 28, Lake Riley

The sails got wet and so did we!:) No Pictures as we could hardly see between the rain”drips”! Yes.. we were DRIPPIN!!

It was a relatively warm rain and we were among friends so…. IN All That Mattered..  ALL was GOOD!!

We were accompanied by several from the Rochester Fleet being that we were on their home turf!

Scores were after 5 races as follows:

  • Nett    7      Johathan Gorbold
  •             9      Terry Schmidt
  •            10      Jack Bennett
  •             11      Gary Schmidt

  •             22     John Yost
  •            23.5   Nelson Habecker
  •           27.5     Anne Lambert
  •           36        Bob Rotolo

The excuses were:

  1.  Bob had a servo problem that prevented him from tacking.
  2.  Anne spent much of her time under wraps trying to stay dry.
  3.  I (Nelson) just wanted to stay close to Anne.

RC RACING ON RILEY LAKE SUNDAY OCTOBER 28TH

Riley Lake is just off Interstate 490 at the Culver Rd. Exit

This coming Sunday we will be holding Week 3 of our Frostbite Series on Riley Lake in Rochester  from 2-4PM.  Also invited to race with us are any members of RAMYA that would like to participate.  Following racing Bill & Mary Schmidt have offered their home ( 254 Fair Oaks Ave., Rochester, NY) as a place to settle our on the water protests and warm ourselves up.

Week #2 of racing at Steamboat Landing was anything but a drifter.  Many Sailors were seen switching from “C” sails to “D” and back. I am sure that wind gusts exceded 20 knots at times which made not only  racing your boat difficult but also controling it between races.  At one point I thought I had secured my boat on the docks under a cleat only to turn around and find Tracy fetching out of the water for me.  “PHEW”.  I was able to return the favor later when she attempted to stop her boat from going under the docks by grabing the sail mast.  Yep, the mast came out and the boat kept going.  Leaning over the dock on the other side my fingers where just long enough to grab before it would have been out of reach.  “PHEW AGAIN”.

For the remainder of is series it has been decided that Fleet 14 will be racing in a handicap format based on racing experience and ability.  Each racer will be given a stagered start time for the remainder of this series based on their handicap.  Our intention is to allow all of us to experience the thrill of leading and holding off challanges to win races.  Those with the least experience will start 90 seconds before the start of the most experienced.  All others will be started somewhere between.  We hope that this format will be fun for all and encourge more racers to participate.

“Week 1” of Frostbites Series on the Erie Canal

Racing on the Erie Canal can be very challenging.  Not only for RC Lasers but other boats as well.  “The boat in this photo is not the mark set boat.”

Fleet 14 held 5 races on Sunday afternoon  in diminishing winds and strong currents.  “A” sails the entire afternoon.

Fortunately for Neil Atkins (#172) paddle boats were available for rent at this location as his boat decided to park on the other side of the canal with drained batteries.

Due to conflicts with many of our fleet next Sunday, we will postpone racing until 4:30 PM and will set out marks at the public docks at Kershaw Pack in Canandaigua.  We will get in as many races as possible before the sun starts to set and then retire to Anne & Nelson’s cottage at 423 Holiday Harbor for a bit to eat and drink.

As everyone I’m sure is aware, Tracy and Bill Blevins are in their way to a larger pond to sail in.  My first order of business as fleet captain is to extend our thanks for all they have done for our fleet and to award them honorary membership in our fleet. What that means is that while they won’t be participating in the races we have here, when any of us are traveling in their direction with a laser in hand, racing may be held at a location of their choice and results will be scored towards the high point series of that year. So if you find yourself in need of a higher score just visit Tracy and Bill and your sure to pick up at least a third place finish.

Frostbite Series Starts Oct. 14 – Sail with Bill & Tracy!

The first race of the 2013 Frostbite Series will be sailed Sunday October 14th starting at 2pm.  Sailing will take place on the Erie Canal in the Village of Fairport.  Park behind Riki’s restaurant by the public launch. We’ll sail from the wooden wharf on the north side of the canal (west of the lift bridge).

This will be your last chance to race with Bill and Tracy before they head off to their new home.  The next time you will get this opportunity will be at the Blevins’ Invitational Regatta (date and location TBD).

The Erie Canal in Fairport is best known as the historic birthplace of the Canandaigua RC Laser Fleet.  It is here where young Bill Blevins first sailed his RC Laser. In his later years Bill decided it was his mission in life to share the the RC Laser experience with anyone that would follow his lead.  And follow they did – in no time at all we were all taking out second mortgages to order any thing we could to help us rise to the highest level of RC Masters.

A farewell party for Bill and Tracy will be held at Gary and Terry Schmidt’s house (8 Caywood Lane, Fairport) immediately following the races.  Please come to the gathering so we can truly thank Bill and Tracy for the great times that have given to all of us.   If you have not already done so please RSVP to Terry at [email protected].

Jonathan Gorbold Wins The Race Across The Lake

Race Report by Admiral Nelson.

The weather was just perfect. The wind was out of the northwest and the west and the southwest for much of the race and at times was not there at all, for which Anne was thankful.

The race from the Canandaigua Yacht Club across the lake to Neil and Maggie Atkins’ house 2.5 miles away took about an hour and a half to complete and everyone finished with an excuse for not winning.

Nelson, who was leading for much of the way, gave up the lead to Jonathan by making a left turn to the house that wasn’t Maggie and Neil’s.

Jay Niggli was following Nelson which turned out to be a not so good idea.

Bill Schmidt tried to hug the shoreline but was stopped short of the house by a sea urchin (we believe it was just seaweed).

Terry Scmidt and Jack Bennett approached the dock with caution trying to avoid the same calamity as Bill.

Upon arrival we were all graciously greeted by our hosts, Maggie and Neil, who did their “usual” by putting on a spread that we all enjoyed for hours.

We did set out marks and conducted a few races but soon gave up due to all the weeds catching on the keels of our boats. (Could have been caused by the fight Bill’s boat had with that sea urchin.)

The food and drinks were our main focus for the remainder of the day and Jonathan showing off his $1,000,000 bill, his bubbly, and his horn that he tooted occasionally.

Race Across The Lake, More Racing & A Cookout!

Roughly 2.5 miles, heading of 156.4

Join us, rain or shine or hurricane, on Sunday, September 16th at 1:00 pm for a RC Laser race from the Canandaigua Yacht Club to Neil and Maggie Atkins’ house!

Please let Maggie know if you plan on coming over for the cookout. She said there was no need to bring anything but she would like to have a good headcount by Sept. 14th.

Nelson and I will run across the lake in a powerboat and set up a finish line in Deep Run Cove in front of their house and then be back at CYC by 1 pm where we’ll get set up for a start gun at 1:30.

If you can’t figure out your ride across the lake, we’ll have directions for you to drive around and those who sail across will meet on the other side. Once we are all over there, we’ll set out some marks and race in the afternoon while the food is grilling. So, please make plans to come whether or not you want to race across!

These races are for fun and won’t count for our overall high point awards or for the Fall Series scores.

In other news, the Old Salt’s Regatta will be sailed in Sunfish this year. A representative(s) from each fleet competes on behalf of the fleet where they normally race during the year (J/24, J/22, RC Laser, Ensigns, Cruisers, Vanguards, Sharks, etc.). The regatta has been moved to 9 a.m. on Sept. 15th and is held at CYC. If you would like to represent the RC Laser fleet in this regatta this year, please let Bill Schmidt know so he can get you set up with a race-ready Sunfish to use for the competition.

This Sunday, September 9, at 4 p.m. we will continue the Fall Low Points Series with Week #4 of 6. The scores are tightening up so make plans to come out and sail!

Terry Schmidt Wins $50 In Women’s RC Laser Regatta

After 12 races in moderate winds and mainly “C” sail weather, Terry Schmidt bested the other female competitors (see the full results here), taking home the $50 cash prize for the Women’s RC Laser Regatta that was announced last night and sailed today.

In other news from the event…

  • Leslie Bennett’s transmitter battery died during race 2
  • Tracy Blevins’ feet went numb during race 10 because of the high heels she was wearing
  • Christine Stebbins had to go get ready for a date after race 8
  • Anne Lambert sailed consistently near the top of the results but her feather boa started bothering other competitors during race 3.
  • Nelson Habecker was a great PRO and Bill Blevins was competent as scorekeeper.
