“HAPPY BIRTHDAY JONATHAN”

IMG_0028Last Sunday was Jonathan’s birthday and we were all surprised by the cake that Anna whipped up.  After the excellent stew that Mary Schmidt served “for all” Anna exposed a chocolate/raspberry/walnut  birthday cake made without flour.   I vote Jonathan have 2 birthdays a year.        IMG_0025

With just two weeks left to race the only separation seems to be between the sailors on shore.  Jay Niggli is currently leading with a net score of 19, followed by Terry Schmidt, Anne Lambert, and Bill Schmidt all tied with a net score of 26.  There’s plenty of real estate on shore for spreading out and everyone looks for that spot where seclusion helps their concentration.102_7901 102_7902

Racing for the remaining two weeks will be again at Lake Riley 2-4 pm on Sunday the 10th and 17th.

The temps for this Sunday are predicted to be in the 50’s and for those who need warming up after racing, Terry & Gary Schmidt have offered to host a post racing warm up event at their home (8 Caywood La. Fairport, NY 14450).  Please contact her at [email protected] if you are planning on attending so that she might be able to set out enough chairs.

Jay was nice enough to take the photos you see here and I have also added some additional ones he took to our photo gallery Riley Lake photos 2013.  You can tell the fall photos by the brilliance of the trees.  Thanks Jay.

See you on the water Sunday at 2.

Wk.8 Fall Srs. & Sailor’s Night Reservations For RC’s

Anne at the finish line

Anne “yeah baby”

With just one day remaining in the Fall Series Anne is still clinging on to first place by 1 boat.   With 3 bullets in week 7 it is clear that getting in her way could get you into the water. (A little inadvertent bump and in you go.)  “Jefferson Cup’s” are on the line so forget the polite “OH I’m Sorry” and be prepared to do your turns if you foul a boat on the water.

“ALSO”  Saturday October 19th is Sailor’s Night at CYC.

Please let Terry Schmidt ([email protected] or 585-615-8757) know if you would like to sit with the RC Laser fleet for the 2013 Sailor’s Night Dinner and Awards presentation. Terry will collect the names and coordinate with the club so we can sit together and she can also place dinner orders.

THE HOMEMADE DESSERTS WERE “OUTSTANDING”

IMG_1998

Jack Bennett (front right) eyeing the desserts !!!!

IMG_1999Week 1 of RC racing ( although dominated by the girls) was capped off with the hospitality of boat #68 (Barb Urich and crew).

After a day of frustration for the guys, all is forgiven with the magnificent meal Barb & Tom put on for us.  After the grilled chicken and sausages that Tom prepared, and the sides plates that were brought I didn’t think there would be room for any more.  Then Barb brought out her homemade desserts.  There was Chocolate cake, strawberries w/ cream, and apple/raspberry pie with ice cream.   All I remember is that the calories didn’t matter.

It was also nice to see our PRO (Keith Calkins) and his lovely wife (Joan) attending after such a short time of recovering from heart surgery.  We wish him all the best and a speedy recovery even if he always leaves us short handed at our events.

Week 2 saw most of the guys fighting their way back to the top.  I was not included in that group.  There were just too many boats in my way.

Week 3 will be held once again at the south dock CYC 4:30 till 6:30 or until we have all had enough to eat and drink waiting for more wind to fill in from the south.  I just may have to bring the blender down to kill some time.

See you on the water.

“AND THE GIRLS COME OUT SWINGING”

Anne at the finish line

Anne at the finish line

The first day of the fall series belonged to Anne Lambert with a net score of 3 after three races. In second place was Terry Schmidt with a net score of 5. For the complete order of finish click  “Results” 2013 Fall Series.

On a day that was most challenging the girls managed to avoid the many weed beds that have formed off the docks and navigated very shifty winds flawlessly.  As I recall even Mary Schmidt had a bullet on Sunday.  The guys had best step it up a notch this week or we’re going to hear that war cry (“YEAH BABY”) from Anne again.  If history is any indicator, if you give them a dollar they take your wallet, so I’m sure that they will be out for everything we have. Anne has suggested that the end of the dock positioning of racers should be like auto racing.  If you have the best score you move to the front of the dock.  We’ll see how that flies with the guys.

Racing this Sunday will again be 4:30 – 6:30 off the south dock CYC.  Get ready to rumble.

I would also like to mention that the RC Nationals will be held in late October this year and is accepting registrations.  If you are interested in joining you should register ASAP.  For all the details (times, housing, restaurants, etc.) just click on Notice of Race below.

RC Laser National Championship Accepting Skipper Registrations

July 28, 2013 in Notice of Race by David Branning

The Notice of Race and Registration Link for the first ever RC Laser National Championship to be held in late October is now available. With the recent embrace of the AMYA Rules for sanctioned national remote control classes, the Laser Class has taken steps in the last year to provide tight one design racing rules, a Class Secretary within the American Model Yachting Association (AMYA) and the agreement to hold a National Championship annually for all AMYA members who have registered RC Lasers. Nick Mortgu, Regatta Chairman and AMYA Class Secretary,  has worked hard with the experienced Tred Avon YC, to host this championship along with the support from the Oxford RC Laser Fleet.  Tred Avon has hosted numerous RC Laser Championships over the past 8 years and the venue and meal experience will be first class.

There are tremendous advantages for all skippers to register for this championship as soon as possible. First of all the racing will be run by AMYA President, David Brawner. Dave’s firm but gentle hand will assure a great racing experience and lots of comradery on the dock. Secondly, you can register on-line via Pay Pal, take care of your guest meal fees, join AMYA if you need too, at a discount, all in about 30 seconds.  We will do our best to provide housing for registered out of towners. So sign up first and we’ll go to work.

Let’s fill this regatta to the 30 boat limit as soon as possible. I’M IN!

Jonathan Gorbold Wins Summer Series

IMG_0750

Jonathan Gorbold with his spoils

Once again boat #62 proves to be the best in the fleet.  With a net score of 27 we may have to require that he race without his keel to try and even things up.  Finishing second with a net score of 59 was Gary Schmidt followed in third by his wife Terry Schmidt who ‘s net score was 69.  A special mention of Jack Bennett who took his eye off the transmitter the last day to finish with a net score of 70.  That is as close as you can come to winning a Jefferson Cup without doing so.  He could ask for a recount by filling out the “I wish to donate $50 for a recount form” .

For the complete order of finish click here “Results”

Next Sunday will be the beginning of our 8 week Fall Series which will end on October 6th.  Because it is the beginning of another series we will be issuing new handicaps for all racers prior to starting.

Directly following racing we have all been invited to Barb Urich’s home for a cookout. How very gracious of them to offer up their home to such a rowdy group.  Please join us even if you are not racing if possible.

ATKINS’ HOSPITALITY A WARM WELCOME FOR ALL

It had looked like all was going well for the regatta across the lake to the Atkins’ home.  The wind was out of the west at 3 to 4 knots and the chase boats were ready.

The regatta entries were:

  • Mary Schmidt #88
  • Jack Bennett #005
  • Terry Schmidt #71
  • Richard Hallagan #55
  • Jonathan Gorbold #62
  • Nelson Habecker #54

PROs Sue Bennett and Keith Calkins were on station and sailing instructions were given.

At the start #54 was called over early, not so much for crowding the line, but, for having his chase boat start across the lake first.   Better to follow your boat than show the way.

The further across we all got the weaker the wind.  At about the halfway mark, one hour later, we all concluded that the ice was probably melting and if we wanted a cold one ( which we all did), just pick up your boat and head in.

A scoring method was established to determine a winner if the wind returned but it never happened. Just as well cause the food and accommodations at the Atkins’ was superb.

Many thanks go out to Maggie & Neil for all that they do to make this a suberb event.

The trophies will be held over until next year when we hope to have the ice chests refilled.

Reminder:

We will be holding our week 5 summer series races on Sunday July 14th from 4:30pm till 6:30pm on the south dock at CYC.

ATKINS” HOSPITALITY REGATTA TOMORROW

IMG_2829Last year’s winner (Jonathan Gorbold) will be racing to defend his title as Across the Lake Champion for the third straight year tomorrow ( Saturday July 6th). Entries need not register but do need to be at the starting line precisely at 1:30 PM.  As it stands right now the weather is for winds out of the west at 5 to 6 knots by 2pm and a slight chance of thunder storms late in the afternoon.  We will take the advise of our race committee if it looks like storms could erupt during our race and if cancelled we will simply move all racing to Maggie’s home for elimination portion of the regatta.

Bring a fast boat and extra batteries if you feel you will need them.  Awards will be handed out at the completion of the regatta and before the wonderful hospitality of the Atkins is spread amongst us.

See you on the water!!!!!!!!!

1 WEEK TILL ATKIN’S HOSPITALITY REGATTA

Admiral Nelson's chase boat

Admiral Nelson’s chase boat

Final plans are being made for the Atkins’ Hospitality Regatta which will be held Saturday July 6th.

Rain or shine whether there is racing or not the Atkins’ are committed to hosting us.

If conditions are right for racing, the start line will be the south dock at CYC and the finish line will be 2.5 miles south east  at 4314 Deep Run Canandaigua, NY 14424 (Maggie & Neil’s home).  This is just off of East Lake Rd.

The race will begin promptly at 1:30 PM off the south dock at CYC.  A starting line will be set and the start may be upwind or down depending on the wind direction that day.  I will make every effort to acquire a chase boat if you are planning on racing across the lake.  I will also arrange transportation before or after racing to pick up our vehicles.  I suggest that you either leave your vehicle at CYC or at Deep Run park before racing begins.

If you do not race across you can still enter the elimination rounds of racing at Maggie and Neil’s home.  As long as you win in the elimination rounds you keep racing to improve your position.  Once you are eliminated or declared the winner it will be time to sit back and enjoy the hospitality of Maggie and Neil.  They always do a superb job at entertaining and feeding this group.

I do ask that you please  RSVP (Yes or No) Maggie at [email protected] or Admiral Nelson at [email protected] (cell phone 585-201-0515)so that we may know how many to expect.

If you are planning on attending and would like to contribute by bringing an appetizer or desert please inform Maggie at (585) 396-9973 or [email protected] to help coordinate her efforts.

“OTHER NEWS”   I have adjusted and updated our calendar for racing times on Sunday afternoons by 30 minutes to allow for the afternoon Sharks, cruisers, and J boats to get off the water.  The new time will be 4:30PM – 6:30PM thru October 6th.  I hope that this change does not cause any problems for anyone.

The Atkins Hospitality Elimination Regatta And Party

Saturday, July 6th, Maggie & Neil Atkins will be hosting their annual Hospitality Elimination Regatta which will include a great meal and drinks for all.  The address is 4314 Deep Run Canandaigua, NY 14424.  This is just off of East Lake Rd.

The race will begin promptly at 1:30 off the south dock at CYC.  A starting line will be set and the start may be upwind or down depending on the wind direction that day.

There is no participation fee for this regatta, but please RSVP Maggie at [email protected] or

Admiral Nelson at [email protected] so that we may know how many to expect.

If you are planning on attending and would like to contribute by bringing an appetizer or desert please inform Maggie at (585) 396-9973 or [email protected] to help coordinate her efforts.

This year’s format has been changed from previous years to an elimination series format.  Here’s how it works:

Rules:

  • You are required to have a chase boat to follow your RC across the lake.  If you do not have one we will make every effort to find one or ask that you team up with another chase boat.
  • A finish line will be set somewhere close to the Atkin’s dock which you will be required to pass through in order to finish the race across the lake.
  • Racing from CYC to Maggie & Neils home will determine your seeding  ( 1,2,3,4,etc) .  If you do not race across, but bring your boat by car to their home, you will be seeded at the bottom and will have to earn your way to the top.  Those that do not race across the lake will be grouped in the lowest seed and will race with 50% moving on to the next elimination round.  This will continue until only one remains who will then race against the lowest seed of those that did race across the lake. The winner will progress to the next seed until a winner is determined.
  • A course will be set to the approval of this year’s race  committee ( Keith Calkins and Sue Bennett ) and a race will consist of a minimum of 4 legs (2 laps).
  • If you have been awarded a handicap in our regular series racing you may continue to use it.  If you have not been awarded a handicap you may not petition for one.
  • Racing will end by completing the elimination races or when the hosts ( Maggie & Neil ) determine it is time for all of us to leave.  If all the elimination races have not been completed at that time the order of finish will be whatever your seeding was at the time races were cancelled.
  • The very coveted 1st, 2nd, and 3rd (gold, silver, Bronze)place awards will be presented to those who will have earned their place in history.
  • 1st 2nd 3rd

    1st 2nd 3rd

These races will not be included in the overall high point series but it would be a shame not to participate…
